\ Panama has few rivals in the quantity and quality of its tourist attractions: Fifteen hundred islands on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, the planets most nature-rich, accessible rainforests, spectacularly beautiful mountains and highlands, historical sites from a rich past as an international crossroads, seven living Indian cultures and a cosmopolitan capital city with a non-stop nightlife. Not to mention that other mega-attraction-the Panama Canal. Colon, our port-of-call, was founded in 1850 as one end of the Panama Railroad then under construction. For a number of years early in its history, the sizable United States emigre community called the town Aspinwall while the Hispanic community called it Col n. The name Col n is in honor of Christopher Columbus. Panama The town of Colon itself has some beautiful buildings and a few relics of the canal construction years, but to many it shows its age less gracefully then other major Latin America cities. Most cruise ship visitors will take advantage of organized tours to experience the people, history and culture of this small nation. Among the most popular will certainly include a visit to the canal itself. You can choose a tour that will actually allow you to transit the canal in a large ferry or one that takes you to the Gatun Locks, the engineering marvel that raises huge ships 70 feet as they enter the Panama Canal. Some tours will combine a visit to the locks with a visit to the magical city of Portobello, a market town with a historic fortress. And there is an interesting Kayaking Tour that, in addition to giving you the experience of paddling around a few of the small islands in Gatun Lake, also will include an up close tour of the Gatun Locks. There is a once in a lifetime chance to see two oceans in one hour by traveling the Isthmian Railroad, the worlds first Trans-Continental railroad. Pass through the rainforest and get a glimpse of this remarkable eco-system. Cross the Continental Divide to the Pacific side. Tour the Miraflores Locks on the Pacific side and the old Canal Zone before returning to the ship.

Costa

Costa Rica is an outdoor adventurers paradise. From volcanoes and cloud forests to pristine beaches, this tropical paradise boasts breathtaking beauty. You will find every imaginable activity from birdwatching to bungee jumping. This is definitely the place to visit if you are looking for adventure. You will find pristine beaches, tropical jungles, clear blue skies, high mountain rain forest, and tropical sun. Our port-of-call, Limon, is the second largest city in Costa Rica and will leave you with a lifetime of memories. Soak in the distinct Caribbean flavor of the citys world famous Carnivale de Limon. See the wonder of the sea turtle nesting grounds in Tortugero. Delight in the dolphins at Manzanillo National Park. Or, if ultimate relaxation is your goal, sprawl luxuriously on any of the areas lavish sand beaches. Optional shore excursions will include the very popular and unique eco-tourism sightseeing experience through the canopy of Costa Ricas Central Mountain rainforest. Travel from the coast to the mountain highlands of the Braulio Carrillo National Park. Youll pass a volcano and countless banana plantations providing an opportunity to experience the beautiful interior of Costa Rica Costa enroute to the ainforest. Then, with an experienced guide, travel on an elevated tram through one of the richest canopy communities in the world full of many known and unknown species of plants and animals. Skim over hilltops and sub canopy, a dark world of overburdened tree limbs dripping with mosses, ferns and orchids. Glide on a journey through and above the canopy for approximately 75 minutes. Or if youd prefer to experience the fauna with the flora you might consider the Sloth Sanctuary & Canoe Adventure. Board your canoe and your guide will row silently through natural waterways. Marvel at the lush tropical vegetation of Costa Ricas tropical rain forest. Visit where over 300 species of wildlife live in this protected setting. Explore nature trails with your guide and arrive at the sloth sanctuary. Take the time to learn about these incredible slow-moving creatures, their habits, and hopes for their future. Also available, and quite popular, is a Water Rafting Adventure. Journey 10 miles down river for some of the best rafting in Central America. Be entertained and challenged by a mix of relatively easy and challenging rapids. Enjoy the magnificent scenery, as you paddle down a class III River.

Belize

Belize City is your gateway to mystic Maya Sites (only found in Central America), adventurous caves, rivers, unique flora, fauna and relaxing breathtaking beaches. Belize City, with a population of 70,000, is a bustling, fascinating place, the countrys biggest city and former capital.
Places worth a visit while in Belize City include St. Johns Cathedral, the oldest Anglican Cathedral Church in Central America. It was built in 1812 from bricks brought as ballast from European sailing ships, and two Mosquito Coast Kings have been crowned in it. Opposite the Cathedral is the Government House, a beautifully preserved and colorfully painted colonial building dating from 1814, and the residence of Belizes governor-general. A block southwest from there is the Yarborough Cemetery, with gravestones that outline the turbulent history of Belize back in 1781. Towering over the harbor entrance at Fort George point is the Lighthouse monument, which was built from money donated to the country by Belizes greatest benefactor - Baron Bliss, the 5th baron of Portugal. At his request, he was entombed in front of the lighthouse which he designed himself prior to his death. If you are interested in learning more in-depth history of the city, tours are available. Belize
On the north side of the Swing Bridge, the worlds only manual swing bridge which is still being swung daily, you can find the Marine Terminal, a beautifully restored former Belize City Fire Station. It now houses two of Belizes new coastal and maritime museums. Art enthusiasts can visit the Image Factory, an art gallery featuring work by Belizes contemporary artists. The gallery holds outstanding, often provocative exhibitions and you can sometimes get a chance to discuss the work with the artists themselves. The Bliss Institute on the Southern Foreshore is the cultural center of the city and sometimes features performances by visiting dance or theatre companies. Also of interest is the National Handicraft Center on North Front Street, which sells high-quality Belizean crafts including beautiful carvings made from zericote, a two-toned wood found only in Belize.
Carnival Cruise Line offers a number of exciting, optional-priced shore excursions. Some of the most popular include a tour to the Mayan ruin known as Xunantunich (Stone Maiden), set on a levelled hilltop near the Belize River, it is the archaeological pride of Belize and well worth visiting. Overlooking the Mopan River, the ruins of Xunantunich are located approximately eight miles west of San Ignacio Town at San Jose Succotz Village in the Cayo District. The bus trip to the site offers a very nice overview of the Belize countryside. Or for the more adventurous, you may wish to consider a Lost World Canopy Tour where youll take five traverses ranging from 105 to 500 feet apart in distance across the fallen ceiling of the enormous open-air Lost World Cave. Feel the thrill as you swing from platform to platform above the floor of the densely populated forest. Conclude your adventure with an exciting rappel to the floor. Youll feel like a bird soaring above the lush jungle of Belize on this exhilarating canopy tour.

Ft

Consider extending your vacation with a pre or post cruise hotel package in the Ft Lauderdale area. Experience this city with taxis that drive on water, with rivers made of grass, and the most spectacular beaches in Florida. \ Ft Lauderdale has more water than land, more putting greens than lawn, and skies more colorful than an art museum. However, if you can extend your stay there is an opportunity to take advantage of a wonderful excursion to the Everglades offered by Carnival Cruise Line. Upon completion of the tour, you will be dropped off at the airport for your flight home.
